Blog Advertising for B2B Blogs

So you’ve got a business focused blog about procurement strategies.  Or perhaps you’re an experienced internet marketer who rights a blog about b2b marketing best practices.  Perhaps you’re an auditor who rights about the latest new SEC pronouncements.  You’ve got great niche content and a small (but growing) loyal readership.  Most of you probably use your blog to generate leads for your consulting businesses, which is great.  But did you know you could also be earning residual income by running performance based ads on your blog for software companies?

Some of you may know about Affiliate Marketing, sites like Commission Junction or LinkShare or ShareASale that connect web publishers with mostly consumer focused companies who provide banners and links for websites.  The publishers of those websites who place banners from these businesses get paid by the affiliate network everytime a sale is made from traffic that generated from their site.

You also may know about AdSense, Google’s program that allows you to run text ads on your site specific and relevant to the content on your site.  Google scans the text on your pages and delivers relevant text ads that every time clicked, pay you a small amount (pennies usually).

In the emerging software as a services space, a large volume of SaaS vendors offer prospective customers free trials (30 or 15 days usually.)  These vendors are using Repfolio to connect with niche bloggers who can run their campaigns on their sites.  The more relevant your blog is to the specific vertical that software is targeting, the more likely you’ll convert a greater number of free trial sign ups, and get paid simply by just displaying banners/links on your site.  Here are a couple of sample programs available now through Repfolio:

Timesheets.com – online time reporting software for businesses of all sizes – $15/free trial sign up

Coupa.com – eprocurement/spend management solution for any company that spends money – $40/free trial sign up

To evaluate the programs available in Repfolio, sign up as a publisher here, and browse the different SaaS vendors in our directory.  Find ones you are interested in initiate “connection requests” to receive the HTML code you’ll need to plug into your site/blog to display the banners.  You can also use links and write sponsored blog posts, where you actually go into detail describing the software product for your audience.

Whatever the case, you’re content is valuable, and running performance based ad campaigns for relevant software companies in your vertical is a great way to generate some income for your work!

2010 – The Year of Picking Up the Phone

Ok, here it is.

I was scrolling through my contacts on LinkedIn this morning, looking for people I could send a message to about a full time Account Executive position that we’re hiring for.

“We’re looking for a world class sales rep.  Know of anyone that’s out of work or looking for new opportunities?”

This was the subject line I was going to use.  I started typing to my first contact and then it dawned on me – I hadn’t spoken to this person in probably a year,  I had heard she’d recently gotten married, so why not pick up the phone and call her?

So I did, and she answered, which is unusual these days but I think that is going to start to change.   We had some small talk and caught up, and then I dropped the question on her, “who do you know that might be looking?”

Surprisingly, she responded immediately that she knew someone that might be perfect – her sister in law!  How convenient.  She told me all about her, provided her contact info, and know I have a voice message out to a warm prospect that comes highly referred.

So what did we learn here today?

Would I have gotten the same result if I had sent a message through LinkedIn or email to my connection?  Probably.  But what have I accomplished by calling that email could never have?  Let’s evaluate:

  • I’ve spread some good karma by asking someone “how they have been.”
  • I learned things I wouldn’t have via email, through a personal conversation.
  • I feel good about myself.

That’s enough for me.  So you’ve heard it here first, 2010 is the year of picking up the phone – use all of the tools you have out there to manage your contacts (Gist is a great free service!) but for God’s sakes, pick up the phone and say hello to someone this year!
